Classification
Description (detailed)
A code which uniquely identifies a course of study leading to an undergraduate award; or the course of study to which a unit or units of study from an undergraduate combined award course are to be coded. This code is used for the purpose of calculating the percentage of domestic student load for students paying tuition fees in that course of study.
CODE | MEANING |
---|---|
All spaces (Hex 20) | In the Student Load File: Not a combined course or no information provided. |
All spaces (Hex 20) | In the Course File: Course of study does not lead to an undergraduate award. |
Any text or numbers | In the Student Load File: Unit of study is part of an undergraduate combined award course, and the code identifies which units of study in the Student Load File are to be grouped when calculating the percentage of domestic students in a course of study who are paying tuition fees. |

Coding notes
The same code may be used in more than one record in the Course File or the Student Load File.
The Course of Study Code provided for individual components of an undergraduate combined award course reported in the Student Load File must be the same as that provided for at least one undergraduate award course in the Course File.
The code is allowed to be changed from year to year.
If a Course of Study Code is provided in the Student Load File then this will take precedent over that provided in the Course File when calculating the percentage of domestic students paying tuition fees in each course of study.
SPECIAL CASES - STUDENT LOAD FILE
Separate Course of Study Codes may be used for each component of an undergraduate combined award course in the Student Load File.
Where a course leads to an undergraduate combined award, such as an LLB/BA, institutions may, if they wish, identify each unit of study as either being part of the individual LLB or of the BA programs by assigning the appropriate Course of Study Code to each unit of study. If an institution chooses to divide the student load between the individual programs then the Course of Study Codes used must be the same as those used for the individual programs as reported on the Course File. For example, the Course of Study Code used for a unit of study relating to the BA component of an LLB/BA program must be the same as that used for the individual BA program.
This student load information will be used to calculate the percentage of domestic students paying tuition fees in each course of study. Provision of this data item in the Student Load File is optional but should be provided by those institutions who wish to distribute student load for combined courses to the individual course programs.
